Corner bot: what it is, what it does and what it does not do

How the bots that send corner alerts work, and what to check before trusting one.

A corner bot is a program that follows live matches and sends an alert, usually through a messaging app, when a set of criteria is met. It does not guess anything: it just does, quickly and across many matches at once, a calculation a person would do watching one match at a time.

How a bot works

The bot reads the live data of each match, minute by minute: score, corners, shots, dangerous attacks. Whoever sets it up defines rules, for example:

  • from a certain minute on;
  • with one team piling up dangerous attacks in the last few minutes;
  • with few corners so far, below what the match usually has.

When a match meets all the rules, the alert goes out. The quality of the bot depends entirely on those rules and on the data it receives.

What a bot does not do

  • It does not know the context of the match. A team can have many dangerous attacks because the opponent has fully sat back, and still no corner comes.
  • It does not consider the teams' history, unless someone has put that into the rules. Pressure from a team that hardly ever crosses is worth less than pressure from a team that lives on crosses.
  • It depends on the live data. If the provider is late or misses a minute, the alert arrives late or not at all.
  • It does not guarantee anything. Many alerts do not pan out. The bot only says the rules were met.

Before trusting an alert

An alert is a starting point, not a conclusion. It is worth checking three things:

  1. Is the match above or below what was expected? Compare the corners up to that minute with what both teams and the league usually have.
  2. Whose pressure is it? Check whether the pressing team usually produces corners, from its average of corners won.
  3. How much time is left? The final minutes of each half concentrate corners, but they also run out quickly.

The guide live corners: how to read the pressure of a match goes into these points in detail.

Bot or analysis?

The bot trades attention for fixed rules. Analysis goes the other way: it looks at fewer matches, with more context. Sniper Cantos is on the analysis side: before the match it shows the corner forecast, the reliability and the minute bands of each game, and during the match it compares the actual count with the expected one. The decision stays with the person doing the analysis.

Statistics show a trend, not a certainty, with or without a bot.

Frequently asked questions

What is a corner bot?

It is a program that follows live matches and sends an alert when a set of criteria is met, for example high pressure from a team at a certain minute.

Does a corner bot guarantee results?

No. The bot only signals that the criteria were met. Corners still depend on the match, and many alerts do not pan out.

Is Sniper Cantos a bot?

No. Sniper is a statistics and analysis app: it shows the corner forecast for each match before kick-off and follows the match live, comparing the actual count with the expected one. The decision stays with the person doing the analysis.
