How many corners are there in a football match? Average corners per game

The overall average, by half, by league and the minute band with the most corners, with Sniper data.

A football match has, on average, 9.89 corners, adding both teams. That is 4.66 in the 1st half and 5.24 in the 2nd half. The home team takes 5.43 per match and the away team, 4.46.

The numbers come from the Sniper Cantos database: 6,005 matches from 53 leagues, updated on 10/08/2026. This page is rebuilt every day, so the values follow the season.

More corners in the 2nd half

The 2nd half usually has more corners than the 1st: 5.24 against 4.66. With the score settled or time running out, one of the teams starts to attack more, and attacks down the flanks often end in a corner.

Which minute band has the most corners

Splitting the match into 10-minute bands, the one with the most corners is 80-90 minutes, with an average of 1.81 per match. The one with the fewest is 0-10 minutes, with 0.79.

  1. 0.79 0-10
  2. 0.99 10-20
  3. 0.95 20-30
  4. 0.98 30-40
  5. 1.31 40-50
  6. 1.07 50-60
  7. 1.01 60-70
  8. 1.00 70-80
  9. 1.81 80-90

The last band includes stoppage time, which helps explain the peak. But the pattern is not the same in every league or for every team: each Sniper league page shows its own curve.

The average changes a lot from league to league

Between the league with the most and the one with the fewest corners, the difference is 4.58 corners per match. That is why the overall average works as a reference, but the analysis of a match starts with the average of its league.

Leagues with the most corners per match:

  1. Besta deild (Iceland): 12.30
  2. Premiership (Scotland): 11.76
  3. 1st Division (Norway): 11.37
  4. Bundesliga 2 (Germany): 11.20
  5. Premier League (Faroe Islands): 10.97

Leagues with the fewest corners per match:

  1. Botola Pro (Morocco): 7.72
  2. Super League (Greece): 8.31
  3. Segunda Liga (Portugal): 8.61
  4. Primeira Liga (Portugal): 8.61
  5. TFF 1. Lig (Turkey): 8.61

The full ranking, with every league and the teams that win and concede the most corners, is on the corner statistics page.

Why the average alone is misleading

An average is a summary, and a summary hides detail. Atletico San Luis's matches average 6.20 corners when they play at home and 12.60 when they play away. Looking only at the overall average (9.40) does not show that difference.

Another point is fluctuation. Two teams can have the same average, one repeating similar numbers every match and the other alternating matches of 4 and 16 corners. The first is far more predictable. That is what regularity measures.

How to use the average when analyzing a match

  1. Start with the league. Compare both teams' averages with the league average to know whether the match tends to be above or below normal.
  2. Separate home and away. Use the home team's average at home and the away team's average away, not each team's overall average.
  3. Look at the latest matches. A season average can hide a different run of form in recent games.
  4. Check the regularity. A high average with a lot of fluctuation is worth less than a slightly lower, steady average.
  5. Look at the minute bands. They show in which part of the match these teams' corners usually come.

Statistics show a trend, not a certainty. Corners vary a lot from one match to the next, and no number guarantees what will happen in the next game.
